May in review: Bradt's best bits

May in Review

This month, we published our brand-new guide to the Isle of Wight, shining a light on one of Britain’s most charming island escapes. Over on the website, we also explored some of the very best things to do on the island, from coastal walks and wild swimming spots to its rich history and wildlife.

The app continues to grow, too, with our guide to Ghana the latest title to drop - and more are on the way.

We’ve also started receiving entries to our photography competition celebrating the British Isles, and the standard so far has been fantastic. There’s still time to enter: submit your photographs before 30 June for the chance to win.

Elsewhere on the website, we headed to Canada’s Prince Edward Island, uncovered some fascinating facts about Kazakhstan and proved, once and for all, why Suriname deserves a place on every traveller’s radar.

Over on the Inside Track, Hilary Bradt reflected on the joys of walking and a lifelong love of birds and beasts that helped inspire our collection of wildlife guides.

And finally, with the rare and beautiful British sunshine making an appearance, we reacquainted ourselves with our wonderful Slow Travel series - a timely reminder to take the scenic route every now and then.

When most people think of South America, this small, remote country on the northern coast rarely comes to mind.

It sits quietly off the usual travel circuit, overshadowed by better-known neighbours, and that distance - both geographical and cultural - often raises a simple question:

Is Suriname worth visiting?

Kazakhstan's blend of old and new makes it a fascinating place to explore, and these fascinating facts about the country reveal the breadth of influences that have shaped its landscape, culture and identity.

Imagine this…

You’re walking through the British Isles when something catches your eye - a flash of light over the hills, a fleeting moment of wildlife, a street scene you almost didn’t notice. You pause, instinct kicks in and you reach for your camera.

Two months later, that split-second decision could have turned into something extraordinary: an award-winning photograph, all because you took a chance and entered our brand new photography competition.

We’ve joined forces with William Gray and the Royal Photographic Society to launch a competition celebrating remarkable moments captured across the British Isles.

Open to amateur photographers aged 18+, the competition welcomes entries in landscape, wildlife and city photography, along with a portfolio category for those looking to tell a bigger visual story.

And the best part?

It’s free to enter, and you’ve got until 30 June 2026 to submit your shots.
